Established in 1975 ESE is a leading independent UK manufacturer / supplier of an ever increasing range of industrial storage equipment, materials handling / workshop equipment, facilities / maintenance equipment, health & safety products, changing room furniture, lockers and general business mail order products.
We are an extremely ethical, customer focused, well financed and stable family business with zero borrowings, so you can rest assured we will be here to service your needs for many years to come.
Many of us have worked for ESE for more than 20 years, enabling us to provide you with un-rivalled continuity of service, from the most technically capable, friendly and dedicated team in our industry.
We welcome your enquiries and orders to enable us to demonstrate the ESE difference, as we firmly believe you should always Expect and Receive Excellent Service.

Around 70% of our products are UK made to ensure quality and with our discounted trade prices and large stock holding we know we have the Right Product at the Right Price and we can deliver at the Right Time.
In the unlikely event you find the same product cheaper elsewhere we will match the price.
Over the last few years we have achieved massive sustained growth (more than 60% increase in turnover and 190% increase in customer numbers), but we will always ensure we put the systems and staffing levels in place to ensure we continue to look after you our customer to the very best of our ability.
Obviously no-one is perfect (we still achieved 99% first time customer satisfaction last year) and from time to time we all make mistakes, but when we do we promise to put it right as quickly and efficiently as possible.
ESE Business Divisions
Eastern Storage Equipment Ltd was established by Brian Francis in 1975 selling shelving, racking and associated storage equipment, in the early 1980’s we underwent a step change and have been trading very successfully since, we now have 21 dedicated and experienced staff working within our three divisions:
- Since 1990 ESE Cloakrooms has been designing and manufacturing cloakroom seating, changing room benches, peg rails, wall fixed shelving and clothing racks to suit mainly the leisure, education, emergency services, sports and health sectors plus commercial changing facilities in larger businesses. We now manufacture Four Unique Ranges containing 21 variations of cloakroom benches (including the Stainless Steel ranges launched in 2011) and 6 variations of changing room accessories, all available in five standard sizes from 1m to 3m wide and six colour choices. Our cloakroom equipment is regularly specified by architects and designers and sold to main contractors, business mail order catalogues, via ‘approved distributors’ and direct to end users. We are confident we can provide strong and competitive solutions to meet your needs from our standard ranges, or we will design and manufacture a cost effective bespoke system to suit your exact requirements.
- Since 1984 ESE Direct has been supplying over 20,000 industrial /commercial products from cable protectors and safety barriers through first aid kits and signs to workbenches, cupboards / lockers (and including shelving and racking obviously). We supply to more than 6,000 clients spread across the public sector, emergency services, all sizes of businesses, organisations and charities via our own comprehensive free mail order catalogue, and since 2000 via our unique secure Online shop. Even in the current economic climate ESE continues to grow year on year and online sales now account for more than 65% of turnover even though we are currently still a UK only supplier. You can order online, by email, live chat, phone, fax or even still by ‘snail mail’ if you prefer.
- Since 1983 ESE Projects has been designing, supplying and undertaking refurbishment contracts in offices, warehouses, factories, leisure facilities, retail premises, trade counters and stores / stock rooms. Using the latest software and our extensive industry experience to ensure the most cost-effective, ergonomic and practical solutions are offered to suit your requirements and budget. Whether your project is under a thousand pounds or worth hundreds of thousands of pounds we will always strive to offer the highest quality finish and customer service possible. We have extremely experienced specialists in office partitions, industrial steel partitioning systems, mobile shelving, racking and mezzanine floors of all types. We have access to many highly recommended related trades and can compile a full package as principal contractors or work closely with other contractors on your site as part of a larger team. We would welcome the opportunity to discuss your requirements in detail.

Technical Sales
-
Stuart A – Joined July 1987
As you can probably guess by the length of time he has been here, Stuart has worked in the warehouse, in customer service as an estimator, and now in Technical Sales as he has enormous technical experience of most of the products we sell today, especially shelving, cloakroom equipment, our catalogue items and the options / accessories available. Like Glynis and Mark, Stuart has a great many customers who regularly call him to ask "where can I get hold of this…" or just to wind them up if their team should beat our beloved Norwich City. -
Mark W – Joined December 2002 having worked for our competitors since 1985
Promoted to Sales Manager in 2011 and having already worked in our projects and supply only / internet sales divisions, Mark has been a driving force in our sales team for many years. He has tremendous knowledge of almost every product we sell especially heavy duty racking, tyre racks, handling equipment, mezzanine floors and bespoke manufactured products and Mark also has a huge base of regular customers. In all honesty if he, or Stuart, can't solve your problem I don't know of any other company who could. -
Kelly W – Joined January 2011
Kelly joined us from a major national corporation where she had several years experience as customer co-ordinator. In addition to Online and Catalogue Sales she is ‘the voice of ESE' (not literally), the chances are when you first call us it will be Kelly who answers and she will try her level best to assist you with your enquiry, failing that she will direct your call to one of our technical teams. Kelly has already assisted in significantly improving our enquiry turnaround time ... A keen keep fit fanatic who regularly runs or bikes to work she has a lovely friendly personality and she will keep us all on our toes.
Customer Services / Order Processing
-
Glynis C – Joined June 2002
Glynis has specialised in customer enquiries and order processing for many years, she has a brilliant knowledge of lead times across the ranges of products we sell. Many regular customers and suppliers ask for her by name. One of several team members who live a very short distance from the office, she has been known to regularly pop back after tea to make sure the customer's order has been processed in time to catch the carrier. Loves trying her best to make sure customers get their deliveries on time and the factories keep to their promises. -
Hugo S – Joined August 2010
Hugo joined ESE as part of our rapid expansion plans, he has helped us to ensure we process your order as quick as we can to make sure you get the correct goods on the day you need them and specialises in handling our online orders and making sure ESE and our factories deliver on our promises. -
Michelle M – Joined September 2011
Michelle joined the ESE family in 2011 and she is already receiving high praise from clients as to her efficiency at handling issues. Michelle not only provides our customers with prompt delivery information and ensures that we are always communicating the current situation throughout the order process. She is your first port of call in the unlikely event you have an issue with your order. (No company can claim to be perfect, but if we mess up we guarantee we will always try our best to resolve the situation to your satisfaction as quick as possible), welcome to the team Michelle! -
Luke P – Joined October 2011
Luke joined ESE as a General Administrator, he has settled in nicely and manages our email traffic and the associated paperwork to ensure that our customer service and admin processes flow smoothly and we continue to communicate with you our valued customers effectively at all times, welcome to the team Luke!
Projects
-
Paul K – Joined January 1977
Initially Paul worked as an installer for our Projects division and in 1999 he ‘came in from the cold’ to become Projects Manager. Because he has actually installed almost every shelving system, partitioning system on the market, as well as mezzanine floors, suspended ceilings etc he has an unrivalled knowledge of what would provide the best solution for your particular needs and he also has meticulous attention to detail. With Paul in charge you can rest assured your project will be delivered on-time and to your budget. Like Kelly, Paul is a keen keep fit fan and also took up biking in 2010 (like several others in our team) to enter a charity bike ride, and he has not stopped since. -
Paul H – Joined March 2008 having worked for one of our competitors for 20+ years
Paul lives in Essex and covers most of the East of England for our busy Projects division. Having been in our industry for so long he has an incredible knowledge of our product range and really enjoys assisting customers in overcoming their space, storage or handling problems by designing, specifying and creating storage, handling or office refurbishment schemes to suit your budget. He is fully committed to visiting our growing customer base, so make sure you give him a call today and ask him to assist you in making an informed decision. The only down side is it is very confusing having 2 Pauls in the same department! -
Adam Y – Joined September 2011
Adam joined the ESE Project team to assist with estimating and co-ordinating activities within the department and has already helped significantly improve our enquiry to quote turnaround time. Adam has a wealth of experience gained from being in the Construction Industry prior to joining ESE, he has a lot of good contacts and is keen to learn new trades and develop his existing skills, he is an asset to the team. Welcome on board Adam.
Accounts
-
Margaret S – Joined February 1989
Margaret is another of our lovely longstanding employees. She joined as an assistant accounts person but quickly stepped up to become a Manager and runs our Accounts department extremely efficiently. She produces the management accounts, looks after customer receipts / supplier payments and controls our enviable cash flow situation. (We couldn't possibly confirm or deny her nickname as we love her so). If you have account or purchase ledger queries Margaret is the lady to contact for a swift resolution to any issues. -
Caroline F – Joined April 1994
Another long standing member of our team Caroline has worked in accounts, sales and order processing as well as customer service and can turn her hand to almost anything. She is passionate about ensuring we provide the best possible customer experience and is very knowledgeable on most of our mail order items. Caroline now concentrates mainly on auditing our business processes, credit control, assisting with invoices, supplier management and helping the management team to meet their targets. -
Roderick B – Joined March 2005
We like to call Rod our 'utility player' as he is often the first to offer his help when the workload starts to build up (our customer base has grown by more than 190% in the last two years), or cover in any department for holidays / sickness and he has made it his business to learn almost every single team member's job. More recently he has specialised in Purchase Ledger control, Invoicing and Accounts to help us maintain our exemplary payment history with our long standing suppliers (some suppliers have been with us for more than 30 years).
Warehouse / Deliveries
-
Neville W – Joined December 1998
Neville is our oldest member of the team (born before the war but not saying which one!). If you see our van coming down your road it is almost certain to be him driving (watch out for the homing pigeons and dogs inside though). Nowadays, he mainly covers just the East of England and we use carriers for most deliveries throughout the rest of the UK, although on some special projects he has been known to travel the length of the country on a Sunday or through the night to make sure the delivery is on site first thing in the morning. -
Darren H – Joined September 2009
Darren looks after the smooth running of our warehouse and is responsible for helping young Kris to pack, despatch items from stock and manage our carriers paperwork. He also oversees the assembly and quality control of our cloakroom seating / benches. Nothing is too much trouble for Darren, he is a keen cyclists and he gets on very well with all his colleagues, we look forward to seeing him progress through the company as he has the ability to do (both Stuart and Simon started their careers in the warehouse). -
Kris C – Joined April 2011
Kris joined as our new Warehouse Assistant, he has previous warehouse experience gained at a national DIY chain. Kris is one of two apprentices that ESE recruited as part of the Norfolk campaign to recruit 100 apprentices in 100 days. We are really pleased Kris has joined us, he is a really thoughtful and helpful addition to our ‘family’ and look forward to training and developing him through NVQ in Warehousing in the coming years. He is also a keen cyclist and with so many now at ESE we have installed bike shelters and bike racks to keep them all dry and secure.
Internet / Catalogue Department
-
James McC – Joined April 2007
Having had many years experience in programming, database and website design / development for several international banks based in London (the big smoke to us country boys), James relocated back to Norfolk. Tasked with managing our entire IT needs (hardware / software) he also assists the rest of the team to constantly improve our enormously successful websites and the way they integrate into our back office systems. James is obviously doing a great job as online sales have grown by more than 500% since he started and now accounts for over 65% of turnover. He is the closest team member to our offices (I think he could just about throw a keyboard into our yard) and has been known to forget to go home! -
James McA – Joined May 2010
James worked with us as a freelance graphic designer for many months before he joined us permanently. He is responsible for the compilation and creation of our brilliant 400 page printed mail order catalogue, our e-catalogue and our Projects / Cloakroom Seating Brochures etc. He also maintains our website graphics and is currently helping to build several new websites for us. So, watch out for their launch dates in the News section, as he is extremely talented and a valued member of our team (even if it is confusing having 2 James Mc’s in the same department)! -
Lee N – Joined May 2010
Lee is a specialist in Search Engine Optimisation as well as web design and site usability and he works very hard with James McC and James McA to ensure you can always find the products you are looking for on our websites. If you can't find them please let us know so we can resolve the situation for other users. It is probably fair to say that without Lees help you would not have found our website so we have a lot to thank him for and he is another valuable member of our team. We all love to learn from other people's experiences and we enjoy finding solutions to any challenge whether it is a customers or our own internal challenge. Lee is also a keen cyclist and joined the others in the charity bike ride.
Managing Director
-
Simon F – Joined March 1984
As you can probably guess by the length of time he has been here, Simon has worked in the warehouse, as a delivery driver, in sales, in customer service, as an estimator, as project manager and even as an installer on a few customers’ sites, in fact almost everything except accounts. Now his resting place is Managing Director of the company established by his father in 1975, he loves just about everything about ESE and our team are his 'extended family'. He is now responsible for the creative development and content of our mail order catalogue and websites, marketing and supplier relationships, along with the long term development of the business (60% growth in two years can't be bad).
NOTE: Please bear in mind these photos do not really do us justice; the double chins, grey hair (or total lack of hair), beer bellies etc have all been added by our wonderful graphics team!!! We look much younger in real life, so why not pop in for a coffee soon?
History of Eastern Storage Equipment Ltd
As a long established, stable, family business history and a sense of belonging is very important to us, this is a brief synopsis of the key milestones that have led to ESE becoming one of the leading suppliers of industrial / commercial products to businesses and organisations across the UK.
January 1975 – Established by Brian Francis, ESE originally operated from a small summerhouse in his back garden. Primarily selling Shelving and Racking as he had been working for many years in this industry as the top sales person for Link51 one of the leading manufacturers.
1980 – Rapid expansion led to a number of moves, culminating in a final relocation to our current headquarters in Northumberland Street, Norwich. It is from this location we continue to serve our loyal and extremely varied customer base throughout the UK.
1983 – Supply and Installation of Mezzanine Floors, Office Partitioning and Industrial Steel Partitions were added to the portfolio and the offices were first refurbished to provide a working showroom of the types of products / services we could provide our clients (since refurbished and extended numerous times).
1984 – First 128 page Mail Order Catalogue was despatched and the product range was expanded by approximately 4,000 items to include handling equipment, trucks / trolleys, signs, noticeboards, first aid kits, litter / wheelie bins, ladders, lockers and workbenches.
1989 – Development of Northumberland Street commenced, seeing ESE purchase the land in front of their offices and build an additional 6,000sq ft of ground floor storage space, as well as adding mezzanine floors and racking floors to the existing 6,600sq ft to improve facilities.
1990 – Cloakroom Seating manufacturing division was established and the first Versa range of cloakroom benches were designed in-house and sold primarily through other B2B mail order catalogues.
1997 – First fairly basic Brochure Website was launched (when most competitors did not even have a website).
1999 – Brian's eldest son, Simon took over as Managing Director (having started in 1984 in the warehouse and gained experience across the business first, like many of our team). The business started to grow beyond expectations with the customer base more than trebling and turnover increasing and plans were put in place for year on year growth.
2000 – First full Online Ordering Website was launched containing all 7,500 products from our 300 page business mail order catalogue.
2003 – Changing Room Bench ranges we manufacture were fully redesigned and cost engineered in conjunction with some of our Architect / Main Contractor clients, to ensure we continue to provide benches with industry leading seat strength, easy on-site assembly, the best range of 'standard sizes' and common 'core components' to aid product versatility and reduce stocked variations.
2004 – Online sales became an increasingly important part of our business model so independent websites were created for each division to enable more detailed and specific product information to be displayed to our 'core products' www.esedirect.co.uk - www.eseprojects.co.uk - www.cloakroomseating.co.uk As a result online business more than doubled in that year.
2007 – In 2007/8/9 ESE entered a number of National and Regional Awards for customer service, use of technology and business growth and were lucky enough to have won or been finalists in 80% of all entered.
2008 – Was the best year in our 33 year history with increased sales, significantly increased customer numbers who were spread across the entire UK (only 4 postal districts not supplied) and we supplied products to more than 190 different industries. Two new cloakroom bench ranges were designed and the existing 18 year old range was given a makeover to bring it upto date and to reflect the latest requirements from Sport England and the Football Foundation.
2009 – Launched two new cloakroom ranges - Budget range an ex stock changing room bench seating for the construction industry and – Club range aesthetically pleasing designer cloakroom benches with round frame legs at extremely competitive prices. We decided to create our First in-house B2B mail order catalogue instead of relying on ‘external providers’ who determined the content and pricing for us. The last four months of the year were spent almost entirely analysing all product ranges, suppliers performance / prices / lead times etc to ensure our new catalogue and website would offer the Best Products at the Best Prices in a more customer friendly way, as well as ensuring we provided quantity discounts and enough information to enable an informed purchasing decision.
2010 – Another record year, we launched our First new 352 page mail order catalogue along with brand new in-house designed and created online ordering website and E-catalogue, resulting in a 33% increase in sales and 69% increase in customers. We recruited four new team members to improve admin and maintain customer service and totally refurbished our offices / facilities to accommodate them and the extra team members starting in early 2011.
2011 – Another record year, an Operations Director was appointed to improve our business processes and manage our growth. We also employed five extra sales and customer service staff to ensure our customers remained our top priority and we now have 21 staff. Our IT systems were upgraded to automate as much as possible and enable ESE to handle the much larger volumes of orders / enquiries we now receive. The improved 2011 catalogue was launched with 1,100 New products among 400 pages of seriously competitive quality products. A new range of Stainless Steel Cloakroom Seating with compact laminate seats or all stainless was also launched aimed at the swimming pool and hygiene markets.
2012 – The Mail order catalogue has been revamped again to improve layouts and provide more information to enable an informed purchasing decision. It also contains 800 new products and 3,000 reduced prices, with approx 70% of all products being made in the UK. New websites are in the process of being created and we plan to offer double the current number of seriously good industrial products to you our valued customers within the next twelve months.
